What We Do

Tennis is a vehicle to teach life skills emphasizing the importance of confidence and courage. Our role as coaches is to develop these skills in a positive and inclusive environment.

Our Coaches

Heather Green – Head Coach

Heather Green has been playing tennis for as long as she can remember. She grew up hitting at different tennis clubs and competing in tournaments throughout the Chicagoland area. She attended John Hersey High School where she played the top position on the Varsity tennis team all four years, qualified for State all four years, served as the team captain her junior and senior year and was awarded the Thomas Pitchford Sportsmanship Award her senior year. Heather continued her tennis career at Wheaton College (IL) where she received All-CCIW recognition all four years, All-Conference two years and served as the team captain her senior year. Heather has taught at multiple tennis clubs in Illinois throughout college and after graduating.

Out of college, Heather taught high school English and stepped into her first high school coaching position at Naperville Central High School. After a little hiatus from coaching to spend more time with her young kids, Heather re-entered the tennis world at Wheaton Academy, helping coach her girls’ team to a Top 10 finish in State after two years as head coach. She was named an Illinois Coach of the Year finalist and coached the Wheaton Academy boys’ tennis team that finished 3rd in State. She is currently also a tennis professional at Country Club of Colorado. Heather is married with three children, two dogs and a tortoise. Coaching high school tennis is her favorite job she’s ever had. She loves the opportunity to build relationships with the players, families and other coaches while playing and coaching a sport she loves.

Lori Kiser – Assistant Coach

Lori Kiser is a USPTR certified tennis professional with her Junior Development specialty certification. She currently serves as the Colorado Spring Country Club Head Tennis Professional. Lori is highly experienced with coaching high school tennis having worked with AAHS as well as previously serving as head coach for Pine Creek HS, Widefield HS, Mesa Ridge HS, and at CSCS. Lori is originally from Wheat Ridge, Colorado where she played four years of high school tennis. She went on to play another four years of college tennis for the nationally ranked University of Northern Colorado. She graduated with a teaching degree and currently works at High Plains Elementary teaching Spanish.

Lori has helped run various tennis camps including the USAF Academy Summer Tennis Camp and the Nike Tennis Camp. Lori worked for several years with Nicole Leimbach, a formally ranked national junior player and 5A Colorado #1 singles champion. Lori was awarded the USPTA Intermountain Assistant Tennis Professional of the Year. Lori continues to enjoy playing competitive tennis and is a leader in the Colorado Springs tennis community. She has a son and daughter that both attend AAHS and compete in Varsity Tennis.

Julie Matheson – Assistant Coach

Julie is originally from Anaheim, CA and she grew up in a family that enjoyed recreational tennis. Among her many activities, she participated in one season of high school tennis. After high school, Julie graduated from BYU in Chemistry and then attained her Masters and PhD in Chemistry/Biochemistry at UC San Diego. Julie started coaching at Pine Creek HS in 2013 and during her time there she became a USPTR Level II certified professional. She has especially enjoyed learning about positive coaching techniques and junior and adult development. In 2021 Julie joined the coaching staff at AAHS with experience as a USTA Junior Team Tennis coach, Boys JV Head Coach, and Girls Varsity assistant coach. In 2023 Julie was the recipient of the USTA Foundation’s Donnely award for excellence in coaching. Coaching gives her the opportunity to share her enthusiasm for the sport and she enjoys seeing the growth that athletes make as individuals and as a team. Julie competes at the 4.0 USTA level and spends the hours off court with her family, dogs, horse or working as a property manager.

Ankie Richard – Assistant Coach

Ankie Richard is a USPTR certified tennis coach. She currently teaches kids tennis at Flying Horse Country Club. Growing up in the Netherlands, Ankie participated in many different sports like tennis, soccer, volleyball and gymnastics. In her final year of Law School, she was offered an opportunity to go on an exchange program to the University of Wisconsin in Madison. In 2002 she moved to the US and has lived in many different states and Europe with her Active Duty Air Force husband and three children (a son, sophomore, and a daughter, senior, currently at AAHS.) After a long hiatus, Ankie discovered her love for tennis again about eight years ago. She has been enjoying competitive tennis on several women’s and mixed doubles teams ever since.

Kevin Wells – Assistant Coach

Kevin has been coaching boys' and girls' high school tennis for the past four years. He played tennis in high school and at a junior college in California, where he earned a Bachelor's degree in Economics. Later, he obtained a Master's degree in Military History. Kevin is certified as a Tennis Performance Trainer with the International Tennis Performance Association (iTPA). When he’s not on the tennis court, he serves as a faculty member at NATO Special Operations University in Chièvres, Belgium, teaching NATO Special Operations personnel. Kevin is married and has four children, and a dog named Harley (who loves tennis too).
